While the announcement came with promises to "innovate and transform the future of wearables", Pellegrini and a Fitbit representative were hesitant to describe the specifics of Google's potential impact on the former's flagship products outside of the possibility of further OS and software refinements.

In an effort to significantly raise its profile in the health care field, Fitbitis partnering with Google to improve its ability to share data with medical professionals.

In 2016, Fitbit ended a similar partnership with Microsoft, which allowed users to sync personal medical data with the software company's HealthVault technology.

The companies also plan to design ways for caregivers and physicians to manage chronic health conditions like diabetes and hypertension by using services and technology from Fitbit's recently acquired Twine Health.

Fitbit's new partnership with Google permits users to connect data with electronic medical records in a clinic or hospital.

Fitbit has already been working to make the information collected from its wearables more useful for people.

News of the the partnership resulted in Fitbit's stock soaring almost 10 percent on April 30. Fitbit will use the API to ensure that its data is safely transferred to Google's cloud.

Google Cloud is also committed to meeting the requirements for security and privacy in the healthcare industry, with the majority of Google Cloud products supporting HIPAA compliance, including Cloud IoT Core.

While Fitbit has largely focused its efforts on fitness and wellness, Pellegrini stressed that the wearables maker has been continuously looking to deepen its relationship with health plans and healthcare systems - not just employers and insurers interested in wellness programs. It helps make data available for analytics and machine learning in the cloud.

The Healthcare API was originally launched to integrate with Google's own WearOS platform. Moving to the Google Cloud Platform to store data from user's fitness trackers will allow Fitbit to "scale faster", according to a press release. People who strap Fitbits, smartwatches, and other devices to their wrists are often limited to viewing their data in consumer-grade apps that deliver only modest detail on activity, movement, and general health.
