Attorneys react to MSU Nassar settlement

The Latest Nassar victims to get ESPYS courage award

Hundreds of female USA gymnasts who were sexually assaulted by a sports doctor at Michigan State University have reached a multimillion-dollar settlement with the school, the university says.

The remaining $75 million will be set aside in a trust fund in case there are any future claimants who come forward alleging abuse by Nassar.

The $500 million settlement only applies to MSU and school officials who were sued.

With a stellar reputation as the doctor to Olympic champions, Nassar had evaded scrutiny several times since the late 1990s by insisting his abuse was actually cutting-edge treatment that was misunderstood by some patients.

The attorneys stressed that the settlement, which was agreed to by the university's board of trustees late on Tuesday, was still not final.

The agreement with the lawyers representing 332 women and girls was a "global settlement", the university said. "It is the honest hope of all of the survivors that the legacy of this settlement will be far reaching institutional reform that will end the threat of sexual assault in sports, schools and throughout our society".

"You have to keep pressure on them to make sure that that presidential search happens soon, has a really inclusive process, and also that they are bringing someone in who knows how to handle changing the culture on campus and who is invested in listening to the voices of the MSU community".

Kaylee Lorincz, who spoke about Nassar's abuse in court, had a mixed reaction to the settlement.

There's A Scientific Explanation For The "Yanny" vs. "Laurel" Debate
The Green Needle/Brainstorm auditory illusion has been popping up all over the web in the wake of the Laurel and Yanny trick. But it turns out that there could be a scientific explanation for why people are hearing the recording differently.

"This is a passion all of the Sister Survivors share, and one which has not diminished or changed", she said.

"My choice to come forward publicly against Larry, and later against the institutions that allowed him to prey on children for decades, was motivated by the need for accountability and reform, so that other little children don't live the nightmares we lived", Denhollander said in her statement Wednesday.

Nassar worked as a sports physician at MSU from 1997 to 2016. Any suggestion that the university engaged in a coverup is "simply false", a school statement said.

The scandal rocked Michigan State, leading to the resignation of President Lou Anna Simon on January 24 and athletic director Mark Hollis two days later.

Lindsey Lemke, a former MSU gymnast who was a team captain on the women's team and a Nassar accuser, hailed the settlement as a "victory". It also doesn't say how Michigan State will pay toward the bill. Strampel has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

"It is very important to see resolution on the civil side, and I hope this provides some sense of relief and closure for the survivors", Forsyth said.

The settlement drew mixed reviews from those abused by Nassar.
