They will be coming: US President Donald Trump's missile threat to Russian Federation

Senate Armed Services Chairman John McCain R-Ariz. pauses before speaking to reporters during a meeting of the National Defense Authorization Act conferees on Capitol Hill in Washington Wednesday Oct. 25 2017

Trump caught most of his aides and the Pentagon off-guard on Wednesday by declaring on Twitter that "nice and new and "smart" missiles would soon be fired toward Syria - an announcement that came before an agreement had been reached between key USA allies, multiple American and Western officials said, CNN said.

If the United States action follows the pattern of a previous punitive strike on Syria ordered by Trump past year it will begin with a salvo of cruise missiles fired from U.S. warships in the Mediterranean. Donald Trump tweeted, "Get ready Russian Federation because the missiles are coming nice, new and smart". "Smart missiles must fly towards terrorists, not a legitimate government that has been fighting worldwide terrorism in its territory for several years".

Trump, who has often said a commander in chief should never telegraph his military intentions, apparently did so himself, tweeting that missiles "will be coming" in response to the suspected chemical attack that killed at least 40 people near Damascus.

On the April 7 strike, it was US Navy ships which fired the missiles.

Trump has also spoken by phone with British Prime Minister Theresa May, who on Wednesday said all indications were that the Syrian government was behind the attack in Douma. "So he needs to take action". She would not seek approval from parliament, the BBC said, despite calls from the opposition Labour Party for parliament to be given a say. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in Brussels the attack was about ensuring chemical weapons can not be used with impunity.

With tensions growing pan-European air traffic control agency Eurocontrol warned airlines to exercise caution in the eastern Mediterranean due to the possible launch of air strikes into Syria over the next 72 hours.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned against a missile strike, writing on Facebook Wednesday that it could destroy evidence on the ground and interrupt the work of worldwide investigators.

Israel has struck Syrian army locations many times in the course of the conflict, hitting convoys and bases of Iranian-backed militias that fight alongside Syrian President Bashar al Assad's forces.

The US-drafted resolution would have allowed investigators to apportion blame for the suspected attack, while Russia's version would have left that to the Security Council.

Issues under discussion at this year's summit include ocean conservation, cybersecurity and trade among the member countries. Others are skeptical that increased Commonwealth trade can make up for reduced access to Britain's biggest market, the EU.

Both Trump and his defense secretary Jim Mattis abruptly cancelled upcoming travel plans Tuesday, as the USS Donald Cook - a guided-missile destroyer - moved to within striking range of Syria.

A Downing Street spokesperson said Mrs May, Mr Trump and Mr Macron had agreed that "reports of a chemical weapons attack in Syria were utterly reprehensible".

Asked how Trump should respond to the alleged Syrian chemical attack, Sen.

But Damascus allies confirmed that precautionary measures were being taken throughout Syria.

The OPCW said it would "shortly" deploy a fact-finding team to Douma for an investigation, but United States officials said they were working from their own information and would not necessarily hold back.

"The situation in the world is becoming more and more chaotic but all the same we hope that common sense will finally prevail and worldwide relations will take a constructive path", he said.

"WHO demands immediate unhindered access to the area to provide care to those affected, to assess the health impacts, and to deliver a comprehensive public health response", he added.

With punitive U.S. military action seemingly imminent, Russian Federation scrambled to deflect blame from its ally Bashar al-Assad and, according to a monitor group, Syrian forces evacuated key defense buildings in Damascus.
