Missouri Gov. Greitens indicted on felony computer-tampering cha

Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens charged with computer tampering — his second felony in as many months

The governor's lawyer called the case "absurd", saying Greitens had built the Mission Continues charity list from his personal network and did nothing wrong in ordering staffers there to hand it over to his campaign team.

Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner has charged Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens relating to illegally taking a fundraising list from a veterans charity he co-founded. He was indicted February 22 in a separate case for allegedly photographing a partially nude woman without her consent and making the image accessible by computer.

"Her original case is falling apart - so today, she's brought a new one", Greitens said in a statement.

"She said her investigator would find the truth".

Greitens' attorney, Edward L. Dowd Jr., said the new charge "makes no sense at all", noting that it was Greitens who built the charity and raised millions of dollars for it through "an extraordinary act of public service".

"Two months ago, a prosecutor brought a case against me". Greitens, a Republican, has accused Gardner of liberal bias and has characterized efforts to investigate his actions as politically motivated. "The only person who doesn't understand that is Eric Greitens", Beatty said.

Republican House Speaker Todd Richardson, who also has called on Greitens to resign, said Thursday that a special House investigatory committee is moving expeditiously toward a recommendation on whether to impeach Greitens. The woman alleged that Greitens slapped her in the face and coerced her into oral sex in his basement. His criminal invasion of privacy trial is scheduled for May 14. "When I came home from Iraq after service as a Navy SEAL, I started the Mission Continues to help veterans", he said. Greitens founded the charity to support military veterans as they readjust to civilian life. Over the same time period, he formed other companies to handle his motivational speaking and book-writing business. Not only did he create this list donor by donor, friend by friend, but the Mission Continues still has the list. The organization connects veterans with volunteer opportunities.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley announced Tuesday that his investigation into Greitens' charity, The Mission Continues, has uncovered evidence of criminal activity.

The Associated Press first reported in October 2016 that Greitens' campaign obtained a list of top donors to The Mission Continues and raised almost $2 million from donors who were on it. "Not only did he create this list donor by donor, friend by friend, but the Mission Continues still has the list".

A source told News 4 that donor lists were sent to the campaign at least six times. Greitens' campaign paid a fine and reported the list as a $600 contribution from a former campaign worker, leaving unexplained how the campaign worker obtained the list.

The source also said employees at the Mission Continues knew that doing so was wrong and after sending the list once or twice, some employees said they wouldn't do it again.

Gardner's office began investigating after KMOV-TV in St. Louis first reported on the affair on January 10, the day Greitens was giving his annual State of the State speech. If the Mission Continues got involved with his political career in that way, it could endanger its tax-exempt nonprofit status.
