Iranians killed in strike on Syrian airbase, bodies taken to Tehran

More than 1,000 Iranians have been killed in Syria's civil war, including senior members of the Guards.

Iran is a key ally of the Syrian government, alongside Russian Federation, and Velayati was speaking on arrival in Damascus where he was due to meet with President Bashar al-Assad, according to ISNA.

In a press conference on Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron said the decision to launch strikes in Syria would "not target allies of the regime or attack anyone but rather attack the regime's chemical capabilities".

Syria and Russian Federation accused Israel of carrying out the strike against a Syrian base where Iranians were stationed. It gave no further details.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a letter sent to the United Nations on Monday that Israel is "practicing state terrorism and threatens security and peace in the region and the world".

Tehran, which usually remains mum about Israeli strikes harming its assets in Syria, acknowledged - through its semi-official media outlets - that Iranians were killed by Israel's warplanes, and vowed revenge.

It was not immediately clear what exactly triggered the lawmakers' outrage against the governor, Valiollah Seif.

Syria responded to Trump's threats by evacuating airports and military airbases, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Syria's state news agency says missiles have struck an air base in central Syria in the early hours of the day. Iran also could also push back against the United States in places such as Iraq, where U.S. troops are present.

Israel has previously targeted Iranian units in Syria but did not comment on the latest strike.

This assault comes after a chemical weapon attack on civilians in Damascus' rebel-held suburb of Duma. He said that Washington had "a lot of options militarily" on Syria. According to the White Helmets, dozens died in the attack, while 500 people "reached the medical centers with symptoms of exposure to chemicals".

Saturday's suspected poison gas attack on the besieged town of Douma came nearly exactly a year after the USA missile attack prompted by the Khan Sheikhoun deaths.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has denounced the attack, holding Israel responsible. "Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!' You shouldn't be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!"

The Syrian government denied the allegations, calling them fabrications.

Videos of the incident posted online showed piles of crumpled bodies, many of them women and children, crammed together in an apartment building, wide-eyed and with foam on their mouths, suggesting a poisonous gas had killed them.

The Syrian regime has also been blamed for using chlorine gas on three villages in 2014 and 2015. The group also agreed to give up its prisoners, a key government demand. It says they had been held by the Army of Islam group since 2013.

The evacuations follow a pattern of departures around the capital, Damascus, and other major Syrian cities as the government reasserts its control after seven years of war.

Block said he understand why Americans want out of Syria but cautioned that "the consequences of a USA decision to disengage in the region must not be underestimated".

President Donald Trump on Wednesday warned Russian Federation to "get ready" because "nice and new" missiles would be targeting Syria.

Eastern Ghouta, which is home to almost 400,000 people, fell to multiple militant groups in 2012, months after Syria plunged into crisis and has since served as a launch pad for fatal attacks against residents and infrastructure in Damascus. Some had bluish skin, a sign of oxygen deprivation, according to a statement, symptoms consistent with chemical exposure.

Ansari said Western powers were using the alleged chemical attack as "an excuse" to undermine the Syrian regime's recent success on the ground. Douma was the only town left holding out.

Over 10 people were killed in the pre-dawn attack on the T-4 airbase near Homs. The U.S. threatened military action but later backed down.
