Apple Ordered To Pay $502.6 Mln To VirnetX In Patent Fight

VirnetX wins USD 503 mln jury award against Apple in patent suit

VirnetX Holding Corporation-a Nevada company that many would dub a "patent troll" as it has no meaningful source of income outside of patent litigation-has won a $502.6 million judgement against Apple in a legal case that has dragged on since 2012.

The Texas-based jury found that Apple infringed on VirnetX's patents for secure communications when creating FaceTime, VPN on Demand, and iMessage. Currently, both the firms have locked horns and are in a legal battle since 2010. Apple will likely not give in a pay up, so the battle will likely not end here. Last we heard of the fight was in October 2017, when Apple was ordered to pay $439.7 million, a ruling the company then appealed. While there will nearly certainly be jubilation at the ruling, Apple has a history of appealing.

Man dies in Trump Tower apartment fire in NY
Two people were injured in the fire, which officials said may have been caused by electrical heaters inside the cooling tower. Flames and smoke were spotted billowing and debris raining down from the 50th floor of the Trump Tower around 5:30 p.m.

Bloomberg notes, however, that this could be a short-lived victory for VirnetX. Apple emerged victorious over Samsung after it took the South Korean consumer tech giant to court for stealing its designs and technologies, but the company got a taste of its own medicine this week. Later on, the company was ordered by the district court to pay more than Dollars 400 million as damages to the patent-holding company VirnetX for copyright violations. The court ruled in the favor of VirnetX and has ordered Apple to pay more than United States dollars 500 million as compensation to the patent-assertion organization.

The Federal Circuit, which handles all patent appeals, declined to put this trial on hold, saying it was so far along that a verdict would come before a final validity decision.
