$1 Trillion Deficits To Return, National Debt To Rise, Projects CBO

GOP tax law will add $1.9 trillion to debt CBO

The combined effects of Donald Trump's tax cuts and last month's budget-busting spending bill is sending the United States budget deficit toward the $1tn mark next year, according to a new analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

The Congressional Budget Office projected ballooning deficits over the next several years, without figuring in the potential economic impact from steep tariffs on certain markets proposed by the White House.

The Congressional Budget Office says tax and spending bills will push the deficit to $804 billion this year and almost $1 trillion for 2019.

The CBO typically releases its yearly forecast in January, but Monday's projections were delayed to reflect major tax legislation enacted in December and a subsequent two-year budget agreement. Deficits would grow to $1.5tn by 2028 - and could exceed $2tn if the tax cuts are fully extended and if Washington does not cut spending. On the Senate floor, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said the report is "a reminder of how unserious the current Republican Party is about deficits". The House is set to vote Thursday on a balanced-budget amendment to the Constitution. Over that period, the agency estimates revenue will be about 2 percent less than projected a year ago, and spending about 1 percent higher. Others argued the CBO has it wrong, including Tax Analysts chief economist Martin Sullivan, who tweeted that the agency is "simply incorrect". But such a measure has little chance of passing and the effort will largely be about political messaging.

Iranians killed in strike on Syrian airbase, bodies taken to Tehran
Syria responded to Trump's threats by evacuating airports and military airbases, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Syria and Russian Federation accused Israel of carrying out the strike against a Syrian base where Iranians were stationed.

The government has been able to finance its debt relatively cheaply because of a decade of historically low interest rates since the recession.

In fact America could be staring at a decade where the size of its debt and budget deficit starts growing faster than the economy, and if the economy slows, then the situation will worsen dramatically. "Those effects, as well as a larger federal budget deficit resulting from the new outliers, exert upward pressure on interest rates and prices".

Interest rates are expected to rise in the years ahead which will make interest payments on the national debt even more expensive and could lead to cutbacks in other government spending, from social programs to the military. Deficit hawks also predicted runaway inflation, but the growth in prices has been muted thus far. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont. "It's just conjecture".
