Deadly Nor'easter Leaves 1 Million Without Power Across Region

Residents in Scituate Massachusetts hunker down ahead of a historic storm

A relentless nor'easter pounded the Atlantic coast with hurricane-force winds and sideways-blown rain and snow Friday, flooding streets, grounding flights, stopping trains and leaving hundreds of thousands of people without power from North Carolina to Maine. Coastlines in MA and southern NY saw high tide flooding over the weekend, with streets in downtown Boston flooded to almost historic highs.

Winds along parts of the MA coast that whipped in excess of 90 miles per hour are due to ease Saturday, CNN forecasters said.

Later Monday, municipal officials will participate in a conference call with MEMA officials to explore fix options where needed for damaged seawalls, dunes, or other sea barriers breached during the storm. Heavy snow fell in OH and upstate NY as the storm spun eastward.

The city of Quincy, just south of Boston, says it is sending trash trucks through the hard-hit neighborhoods all week to pick up storm-damaged furniture, carpeting, and bedding. Amtrak reported that most of the stations in the northeast corridor should return to regular service on Sunday.

Of those, 123,000 were in NY and another 114,000 were in Pennsylvania and 72,000 were in New Jersey.

The storm knocked out power to 700,000 homes and businesses from MI to North Carolina. At the peak of the storm, roughly 587,000 customers were without power. Pennsylvania utilities report at least 65,000 outages in that state. At the height of the storm, more than 2 million homes and businesses were without electricity. Some schools were closed amid numerous downed trees and power lines and flooding. Floodwaters had receded in most areas, but the storm had taken huge chunks out of the coastline in MA and other states. Sixteen percent of the island still doesn't have power. Hornell has gotten more than 14 inches of snow in the past day. "This will determine the axis of heaviest snow".

Still, officials said it could be midweek before everyone is back on line. "Many of our buildings have been without power for several days and it will take time for them to warm up". "Driving around, it's risky".

A stop sign stands amid the floodwater in Scituate, Massachusetts, Friday. Waves higher than two-story houses battered the area, making roads impassable and turning parking lots into small ponds. More than 1,800 people alerted Scituate officials they had evacuated, The Boston Globe reported.

On the very tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown resident Andy Towle took video of a 50-foot fishing boat breaking free from its mooring, beginning to tip onto the rocks of the breakwater.

Only a few storms even can compare with this level of flooding, including a 1978 blizzard, a storm in 1991 and January's bomb cyclone, Dougan, the Quincy police captain, said Saturday.

A auto sits in the flooded streets of Quincy, Massachusetts on March 2.

Floodwaters in Quincy, Mass., submerged cars, and police rescued people trapped in their vehicles.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker activated 200 National Guard members to help with the storm.

The macro-scale cyclone hit the US Atlantic coast on Friday and caused heavy destruction in the region spanning from MA to Washington DC with the former facing the full force of the coastal storm.
