Kim Jong-un invites South's Moon to Pyongyang

With delegations from both the United States and North Korea attending the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, the two countries have an opportunity to take advantage and get some diplomacy in after months of angry rhetoric on both sides.

According to the agency, the delegates were invited in person.

Tensions between the two soared a year ago as Pyongyang tested missiles capable of reaching the US mainland and its most powerful nuclear device to date, while Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump traded personal insults and threats of war.

But Moon has maintained that any talks with North Korea should be focused on brokering peace between the two nations, and that South Korea would not meet the north without its assurances of working to deescalate the nuclear tensions on the peninsula.

Speaking to the Post, the men described their stunt as worthwhile as the two Koreas walked out under one flag at the Winter Games' opening ceremony on Friday, despite their being thrown out from one venue.

Moon stressed the importance for talks between the DPRK and the United States, saying an early DPRK-U.S. dialogue is necessary to enhance inter-Korean ties.

The Winter Olympics opened with a spectacular ceremony on Friday, attended by several heads of state who witnessed the joint march of North and South Korean athletes, as Games systems played up. "And so when you put it that way they're not really participating in the Olympics", said Warmbier, who is the personal guest of Vice President Mike Pence at the Games.

"I was anxious there might be some problem", she said.

As much as they would have liked to have seen the recently assembled team get on the scoresheet, the result mattered little to the home supporters, who were only too happy to see the two neighbouring countries link arms and compete as one on the ice.

North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam also partook in the luncheon with Moon, CBS News' Jacqueline Alemany reports.

Mr Moon said the Koreas should "make it happen" and encouraged the north to return to negotiations with the US.

After the game, Moon and the two Kims went down to the ice to meet and speak with the Korea team, while the cheerleaders continued to sing in the stands.

It is rare for the North's official media to refer to the South's leader as president, usually describing them as chief executive or similar, and even more unusual for a picture of them to be shown.

The younger Kim met and had lunch with Moon at the presidential complex as a special envoy of the DPRK leader.

Still, it wouldn't be South Korea if people weren't asking the perennial question when it comes to North Korea changing gears and showering its rival with apparent affection: What's in it for Pyongyang?

The spokesman says Moon replied that the North and South should continue to work to build conditions so that a summit can take place.

Of course, it's a bit apples and oranges to compare North Korea's human rights record/global nuclear threats and the National Football League protesting America's systematic racial biases. "The world cannot turn a blind eye to the oppression & threats of the Kim regime", he tweeted earlier Saturday.
