CAS rejects appeals of 13 Russians on eve of Olympics

Lawyer Richard Mc Laren takes questions after delivering his second and final part of a report for the World Anti Doping Agency, at a news conference in London Britain

They'll wear hastily redesigned or repurposed uniforms.

The Games run from February 9 to 25.

That will be just nine hours before the opening ceremony.

Those six cases had been filed separately with applications by seven members of Russian support staff. CAS said its arbiters reviewed written submissions and "determined that the CAS ad hoc division lacked jurisdiction to deal with any of the two applications". It will reconvene Thursday at noon local time, the day before the opening ceremony.

Russian Federation has repeatedly denied state involvement in doping.

CAS was scheduled to hear on Wednesday the appeals of six-time Olympic short track champion Viktor Ahn and 31 other Russian athletes not allowed to compete in the Games.

The IOC is refusing to invite 13 of the 28 athletes that are still active to Pyeongchang.

Another WADA commissioned report released in 2017 found that Russia's elaborate state-sponsored doping program involving 1,000 athletes in 30 sports produced at least 27 ill-gotten Olympic medals and undermined the integrity of two Olympic Games and several other major global sports competitions over a four-year period.

In an open letter on Wednesday to Olympians, the IOC Athletes' Commission says "we want to give you the assurance that every measure has been taken to ensure that you will be competing against clean athletes".

The International Olympic Committee will crack down on independent Russian athletes at the Pyeongchang Winter Games, preventing them from celebrating with their national flag, IOC President Thomas Bach said Wednesday.

It's the Russians who should be apologizing in Pyeongchang
CAS also concluded there was no evidence the two International Olympic Committee panels "improperly exercised their discretion". The IOC had been taking nothing for granted on Friday following a separate CAS ruling earlier this month which saw it defeated.

His presidency has been dominated by an economic slowdown, record unemployment and allegations of corruption. The address is always made by the sitting president, and is the political event of the year in South Africa.

Non-transparent invitation criteria, inobservance of the CAS verdict, and damage inflicted to the athletes' reputation, dignity and professional career were the grounds of the Russian appeal compiled by the Swiss law company Schellenberg Wittmer, which acts in the interests of the national team.

The letter says "we believe it is important to respect and treat each of these athletes equally".

"We're very pleased that the president of CAS yesterday made the offer to have a round table forum with stakeholders to see what they need to do". Born in South Korea, Ahn acquired Russian citizenship just before Sochi 2014 and was tipped to be one of the big stars of this year's event.

South Korean authorities deployed 900 military personnel at the Pyeongchang Olympics on Tuesday after the security force was depleted by an outbreak of norovirus.

About 1,200 people were kept in their rooms during tests for the contagious virus.

Two Olympic gold medalists are among the latest group of 15 Russians who have launched an appeal seeking late entry to the Pyeongchang Olympics.

Among the complainants is the cross-country skier Alexander Legkov, a crowned Olympic champion at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Bach refused to be drawn on the cases before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which has already lifted life bans imposed on 28 Russians by the International Olympic Committee. They're now seeking to force the International Olympic Committee to invite them to the Pyeongchang Games.

On Wednesday afternoon, the CAS will also be hearing the appeal of 32 other Russian athletes who were not invited by the IOC.

"We're hoping for a fair and logical decision from the court, " he said.
